Cultural and creative industries, in line with widespread use of digital technologies and the institutionalization of intellectual property rights, stands out as an important element of post-modern economic activities such as advertising, fashion, media and information technologies. The sector also contributes to the development of value-added knowledge-based products and services through key links with other industrial sectors.
Despite being one of the promising economies in means of innovation capabilities and outputs, Turkey remains below the desired level of knowledge-based production and ranks way below the world average in terms of contribution to GDP of the creative industries. Considering Izmir is one of the three industrially active cities in Turkey, the creative enterprise culture and ecosystem should be created and strengthened with the opportunities brought by digitalization. In addition, there is a need to establish collaborative ties both within the cultural and creative industries and with other related sectors to expand into R&D, business development, commercialization and international markets.
A digital creative entrepreneurship center, which covers 8 provinces in the Aegean Region and the Cultural and Creative Industries, is established within the scope of the "Create in Izmir" project, which will be implemented by Izmir University of Economics Creative Economy Application and Research Center (IUE + KREA). With the activities to be carried out through this center, it is aimed to contribute to internationalization in technology, innovation and creativity-oriented studies by strengthening the integration of the creative industries with the production sector, together with the regional stakeholders, of the businesses in Izmir and its hinterland. Thus, it is envisaged to increase the power of the cultural and creative sectors in value-added products and services in the Turkish economy.
Within the scope of the project, various activities will be carried out in order to develop the innovative and creative product capacity of SMEs and entrepreneurs and to strengthen the relationship between cultural and creative industries and the manufacturing industry. In this framework, informative webinars will be organized for relevant sector organizations, SMEs and entrepreneurs in target provinces. As creative cooperation activities, contests will be organized to develop innovative solutions, creative projects, software and hardware proposals, as well as online workshops. In addition, entrepreneurship training programme will be implemented for existing and potential creative entrepreneurs.
With the consultancy programmes to be carried out, support will be provided for the development process of new products and business model. In addition, it will be ensured that entrepreneurs and investors come together with pitching events to be held. During the project, in order to encourage the creative entrepreneurship ecosystem and the creative center model, integrated marketing communication, public relations and promotion activities will be carried out. In this context, in addition to the International Design Competition organized through a digital platform, an International Cultural and Creative Industries Biennial will be held in Izmir, bringing together ecosystem stakeholders, including companies, entrepreneurs and investors.
As a result of the activities of the "Create in İzmir" project for the cultural and creative industries, while contributing to the geographical region of the Project becoming a center of attraction for creative workforce and creative investors; It is expected that new businesses will be established, employment opportunities will increase and the sales and export figures of the supported businesses will increase. It is envisaged that the Project will contribute to sustainable development and the economic integration of the region through competitive development.
Within the scope of the project, 2 creative industrial products will be supported, and 60 SMEs are envisaged to increase their sales and exports. It is also planned to establish 20 new businesses and create 60 new jobs in supported businesses.
