The general purpose of the “Scientific Response to COVID-19” grant project, which is the beneficiary of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) and the Turkish Health Institutes Presidency (TÜSEB) consortium, is determined to strengthen and support Turkey's research and development ecosystem in the fight against epidemic diseases. . In addition, more research on drug and vaccine development will be supported through this project, which will provide operational and financial support through a platform that brings together universities, public and private R&D units and industry researchers; Collaboration and joint work will be encouraged to combat COVID-19.
An urgent scientific response in response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic has the potential to have a significant impact on saving human lives and improving public health. For this reason, on March 28, 2020, a rapid monitoring program focusing on COVID-19 was developed under the coordination of TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MAM) Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Institute and the COVID-19 Turkey Platform was established.
The “Scientific Response to COVID-19” project also supports the COVID-19 Turkey Platform. Thus, it is aimed to further strengthen the R&D ecosystem and R&D know-how in order to develop drugs and vaccines for COVID-19. As part of the Scientific Response to COVID-19, 7 vaccine and 9 drug development projects have been selected for operational support. As a result of these studies, it is expected that the procurement processes of GMP certificates and patents and the approval processes of the ethics committee are completed. By providing additional financing to the platform, it is aimed to successfully and promptly reach higher technology readiness levels (THS) for drug and vaccine studies against COVID-19 and to increase the effectiveness of the platform.
Within the scope of the project, with the further development of synergies and partnerships between researchers, new networks will be created that can lead to faster and more effective results in the fight against COVID-19. In addition, networking events will be organized in Turkey and the EU that will bring together the project beneficiaries and researchers involved in the projects within the scope of the platform, so that important steps will be taken in internationalization and networking.
