  • Agrigenomics Hub - Animal and Plant Genomics Research Innovation Center

Agrigenomics is the name given to the use of genomics to protect and increase the productivity of the agriculture, livestock and food industries, and its applications such as Next-generation sequencing (NGS), single nucleotide polymorphism analysis (SNP), real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) are performed in high-tech laboratories. covers.

Although Agrigenomics is mostly used in the field of agriculture in the world today, it is expected that the demand for genomic databases will increase by animal breeders in the future and it is expected to make great progress in the field of livestock.

Food production is one of the leading sectors of our country's economy and corresponds to 7.4% of the total GNP. With its wide agricultural areas, suitable climate, infrastructure and labor resources, our country has a very important potential in the field of high technology food products production. The "Animal and Plant Genomics Research Innovation Center Project", which was developed to evaluate this potential, aims to increase the competitiveness of SMEs in this field by using agrigenomic applications in the field of food production.

Companies working in the agrigenomics sector in our country face problems such as the need for excessively costly high-tech infrastructure investments in prototype production, inability to get international standards certificates due to lack of financial resources, and difficulties in commercializing scientific research.

Turkey's oldest agricultural and veterinary departments and their hosts an on-site is located at Ankara University Biotechnology Institute, is also hosting 22% of all companies operating in the field of biotechnology in the country technoparks. The Agrigenomics Center to be established within the scope of this project is planned to serve SMEs working in this field on issues such as technology design, prototype production and testing, with the support of an interdisciplinary academy.

The center will have 6 departments where different studies are carried out in the field of genomics and an incubator where ideas at the commercialization stage will be developed and where they can receive technical and business start-up support from mentors who will work in the center.

At the end of the project, it is planned to establish new business partnerships, develop 12 innovative prototypes and apply at least 7 national patents, involve 15 women researchers in R&D projects, and increase the competitiveness of these companies in the field of agrigenomics by bringing international certifications to SMEs.
